Mariam is a strong woman. At sea, she has no fear of facing waves while catching fish. On land, she displays her tireless concern over the fate of women around her and fights for the fate of fisherwomen and fishermen.
With all her might, Mariam Badaruddin rowed her boat from the bay to the estuary, passing under a bridge and moving to the edge of the river. After a while, the fisherwoman got off the boat, carrying a bucket of fish. Going out to sea has become her routine for about half a century.
On Saturday morning (19/11/2022), Mariam had just returned home from going fishing in Kupang Bay, the waters extending before Kupang city, East Nusa Tenggara. Throughout the night, the 59-year-old woman was aboard the boat on her own, casting nets and catching fish.
