Biofuel is one of the solutions to the surge of demand for national energy. Further than only reducing the dependency on the imports of fossil fuels, biofuel is also more environmentally friendly. However, the palm oil industry, which is the feedstock of biodiesel turns out problematic as viewed from both the upstream and downstream sides. This study intends to portray the condition of the biodiesel industry in Indonesia while looking at the role of the standard sustainability mechanism as an intervening mechanism that may help such industry comply with the principles of sustainable development.
